The agency in charge of protecting U.S. nuclear material and sites has its first operational robots online to provide security patrols on its Nevada site.

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) said Oct. 4 that the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) will get two more Mobile Detection Assessment Response Systems (MDARS) to improve security patrols at remote portions of the location.

MDARS are small autonomous robots, operated remotely from a command center, designed to perform random patrols, said NNSA. Onboard sensors and real-time video allow the operator to see intruders or suspect activity as soon as the robot encounters it.
