Principals in at least three suburban schools have searched students' cellphone text messages when they suspected the students of cheating, drug abuse or other school violations.

Officials in the Douglas and Jefferson school districts say policies that allow them to search lockers, backpacks and cars parked on school grounds also authorize searches of cellphones when there is a "reasonable suspicion" of wrongdoing.

"We have found instances of texts that revealed both drug transactions ... as well as pornographic material stored in pictures," said John Stanek, an attorney for Douglas County schools. That includes phones with "downloaded material as well as pictures of other unsuspecting students," he said.

here's the deal. school's should be allowed to search lockers. the school owns the lockers. the school should not be able to search backpacks, cars, or the students' persons. cell phone use should not be allowed in the classroom, period. the teacher looking at a text message that the student is writing or reading in class is okay. it's no worse than reading a passed note. the teacher should never be allowed to look through previous messages, however. that is no concern of the school's and is a privacy violation most certainly.

scrolling thru my pics now? no, this isn't right. It's not the property of the teacher. And anyone who contradicts my pov is an ass.

i clearly said, "the teacher should never be allowed to look through previous messages". if the teacher confiscates the phone and sees, on the screen already, the current msg, pic, whatever, than so be it. no contradiction of your pov, so don't call me an ass. thanks for joining the convo, btw.
